The classes and examination of Jahangirnagar University (JU) resumed yesterday after Puja vacation. Again, the teachers and students on the platform ‘Jahangirnagar Against Corruption’ resumed their ongoing demonstration after the vacation demanding VC's resignation. As part of their programme, they brought out their pre-announced ‘protest march’ demanding the removal of Professor Farzana Islam on the campus. The march began from Social Science faculty building and ended in front of new administrative building with a protest rally after parading different streets on the campus.
Addressing the rally, spokesman of agitating group Prof Raihan Rayne said, “Vice-chancellor Prof Farzana Islam is already ineligible to us. We sent a letter to the chancellor demanding the removal of her. But sadly, after our letter, chancellor has not yet answered. On the contrary, university Public Relations Office answered this letter.” “Now a new organisation is being formed to protect the Vice-chancellor. The purpose of this organisation is to cover up their corruption and irregularities. So we will continue our demonstration”, he added.
President of Socialist Students’ Front (Marxist) of JU unit Mahathir Mohammad said, “The Vice-chancellor is burdening the university with persons in charge. The reason for such activities is to run a university in a dictatorship. It is already proved that VC has involvement with corruption. So the corrupt vice-chancellor cannot stay for a moment at this university. We want to tell the authority to remove this corrupt vice-chancellor, otherwise more stringent movements will be formed and removal of the vice-chancellor will be ensured." Over 100 teachers and students took part at the programme.
Besides, demanding the resignation of VC, they will held a protest rally, a solidarity rally and torch procession in this week.
Meanwhile, VC backed teachers yesterday formed a new platform ‘Jahangirnagar Against Injustice and on behalf of Development’. Professor A A Mamun of Physics and Professor Alamgir Kabir of Statistics department were made coordinator and spokes person in this new platform. They announced a 30 member body yesterday at a press conference held at the teacher’s lounge of New Arts building around noon.
At the press meet, this new platform announced programme for the next three days including silent procession, candle lighting at Central Shahid Minar and memorandum to VC against conspirators and corrupts.
