Five suspected robbers were killed in reported gunfights with members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) and law enforcement agencies in Khulna and Habiganj early Tuesday. In Khulna: Four suspected forest robbers were killed in a reported gunfight with members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) in the Sundarbans under Koyra upazila. Two of the deceased were identified as gang leader Aminul and his second-in-command Rafiq. Tipped-off that some forest robbers took position in the Sundarbans, a team of Rab launched a drive in the deep forest in between 3am and 5am, said Lt Col Syed Mohammad Nurus Salehin Yusuf, Commander of Rab-6. Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the "robbers" opened fire on them, forcing them to retaliate that triggered a brief gunfight, Salehin said.
Later, the Rab members recovered four bullet-hit "robbers" and took them to Koyra Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared them dead, he added. Salehin also said local fishermen identified Aminul and Rafiq but could not name the two others. In Habiganj: The alleged ringleader of a robber gang was killed in a reported gunfight with police at Suraboi village in Sadar upazila here early Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Kudrat Ali, 40, son of Omar Ali of Dariapur village in the upazila.
Md Rabiul Islam, Habiganj police superintendent, said tipped off that a gang of robbers was preparing for robbery in a bamboo cluster in the area, a team of police of Sayestaganj Police Station and DB police raided the area around 3am. Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, robbers opened fire on the law enforcers, forcing them to fire back in self-defence that triggered the gunfight, he said
After the gunfight, police recovered Kudrat from the spot and took him to upazila hospital where doctors declared him dead, the SP added.
He also said there were 13 robbery cases against Kudrat and he used to commit robbery in Sylhet, Moulvibazar, Brahmanbaria, Narsingdi and Cumilla with his gang.
Police recovered a locally-made pipe gun, six rounds of bullets, two daggers and rods from the spot.
