Abrar brother leaves Dhaka College

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka

Abrar Faiyaz, younger brother of the slain BUET student Abrar Fahad, has left the Dhaka College for the Kushtia Government College. Faiyaz applied for a transfer certificate (TC) from Dhaka College yesterday morning. ATM Mainul Haque, vice-principal of Dhaka College, said: “We received an application from Faiyaz today (Tuesday), where he (Faiyaz) has asked for a transfer certificate. He does not want to stay in Dhaka anymore after his brother’s death. He wants to study in Kushtia Government College in his hometown. An official from the Dhaka Education Board's college section has confirmed that Faiyaz’s application has been granted.”  Faiyaz told journalists that he does not want to stay in Dhaka anymore due to security reasons following the murder of his elder brother. “My brother (Abrar Fahad) was my guardian in Dhaka. He used to take care of everything here. He was the person whom I trusted the most. As he is not here anymore, there is no point in my staying in Dhaka. Besides, my family members also do not want me to stay here,” he told journalists. Barkat Ullah, father of Abrar Fahad, said Faiyaz has already taken a transfer certificate (TC) from Dhaka College after meeting its principal.

After returning to Kushtia, Fayaz will be admitted to Kushtia Government College. Kushtia College principal Kazi Manzur Kadir told the media that there was no vacant seat in the science group in the college. “But this a speacial case. Prime Minister Sheikh is directly supervising the matter. So, we will admit him,” he said.

Abrar, a second-year student of BUET’s electrical and electronics engineering department, was beaten to death at the university’s Sher-e-Bangla Hall in the early hours of October 7. Some BCL leaders of BUET have been accused of beating him to death for his alleged involvement with the Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of the Jamaat-e-Islami. His father filed a murder case against 19 BUET students, mostly BCL leaders, and several other unnamed accused with Chawkbazar police station. The gruesome murder triggered severe protests on university campuses across the country.
