Focus on social activities, president urges public reps

UNB, Kishoreganj

President Abdul Hamid on Monday urged all public representatives to pay more attention to social activities alongside their regular ones.

“You (Public representatives)shouldn’t show any audacity to mass people. You have to pay more attention to social activities alongside your regular ones. Then people will be benefitted and the country will go ahead,” he said while addressing a public meeting organised by Nagorik Committee of Austagram upazila at the Austagram Govt Pilot High School playground.

Describing people as the source of all power, the President Hamid said “You’re representatives of the people of your area from where you’re elected. If you try to show any arrogance with the mass people, you’ll get very negative feedback in future. Even you have to behave well with those who were your opponents during the election.”

Hailing the ongoing drive against corruption, drugs and gambling, he said, “I received some information that a few people, especially youths, are taking drugs and getting involved indrug dealing in our area. If senior citizens, prominent personalities and public representatives don’t take any step right now to control this, it’ll destroy our area as well as the whole country.”

Abdul Hamid who is on a weeklong visit to his home district Kishoreganj urged all irrespective of their party affiliation to work together to ensure sustainable development of the country, including the haor area.

The President also called upon inhabitants of the haor area not to sell any land to developers and outsiders to save the local environment. “If developers and outsiders have the chance to buy land,we can’t live here in future. Their establishment will ruin our haor.”

Earlier, Abdul Hamid inspected development works in Itna upazila and witnessed the progress of different ongoing development projects, including Itna-Mithamain-Austagram connecting road.

A source familiar with the process saidabout 78.10 percent work has so far been completed. The work on the 29.7-km connecting road is scheduled to be finished by June 2020.

The under-construction Austagram-Nawga road will connect Chatalpar of Brahmanbaria district through a bridge while Austagram-Kastul-Bhantshala road will connect Itna and Mithamain upazilas.
