Death of schoolgirl triggers protest

Protesting killing of a seventh grader and demanding exemplary punishment of the killers, local people formed a human chain in Muktagacha upazila of Mymesningh yesterday morning.

Omama Tasnim, 13, a seventh grader at Govt RK High School was ‘strangled’ allegedly by her father Robiul Alam Rubel, 41, an instructor of the school’s vocational section, and                          step-mother Dilruba Beauty, 30, hailing from Muktagacha town’s Iswargram area.

Upazila Krishak League Secretary Arif Rabbani, Councilor Amjad Hossain, Human Rights Activist Shafiqul Islam Biplob, Sports Organiser Nazim Uddin Ahmed, Kazi Shafiqul Islam and Helal Uddin addressed the protest rally.

They also demanded the arrest of other accused soon.

Family members took the girl to Muktagacha Upazila Health Complex on Saturday afternoon and informed the doctors that she attempted to commit suicide. Omama died at the hospital in the same afternoon, said Mohammad Ali Mahmud, officer-in-charge of Muktagacha Police Station.

On information, police recovered the body and sent it to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy, said the OC.

Police suspected that the girl might have been strangled and for interrogation they detained Rubel and Beauty on Sunday, the OC added.

Police produced them before a Mymensingh court on Monday afternoon with a 10-day remand prayer for each. The court placed on three-day remand for each and sent them to jail, the OC informed.

Earlier, victim’s maternal uncle Dr Rezaul Haque lodged a case with Muktagacha Police Station accusing seven people including Rubel and Beauty on Sunday. Police drives are on to arrest the other accused, the OC said.
