A new online platform for girls’ rights and youth activism, “Hub for Change”, has been launched in Bangladesh, says a press release.
Around 110 young people from different forums and networks, including Plan International Bangladesh youth forum, ACTIVISTA, UNYAP, Young Bangla Forum, World Vision youth forum, National Children task force, University and college students) were present the launching event on October 29, held at the Public Library in Shahbag.
The programme created an opportunity for interaction among the young people, government officials and other stakeholders to discuss their experiences, ideas, expectations and recommendations on how they can actively get involved in the social development process. They underscored the importance of using online platforms as well as social media to create movements towards positive change.
They also recommended that the government take up youth-led programmes where young people can participate directly in the official decision-making process. At the same time, they stressed that law enforcement agencies should play a vital role in preventing crimes, and ensure the security of young people, especially girls.
“Today, almost 50 percent of the world‘s population is under 25. We believe that as young people, we are experts on our own situations, and including our voices in policy decisions that affect our lives will make those more effective,” one of the participants said.
With the aim to make a positive change through young people, the website www.youthforchange.org has been developed as an online platform for youth activists to build skills, foster knowledge and inspire and instigate change. The project has been initiated by Plan International and is funded by DFID.
Abul Hossain, joint secretary and director of Multi-sectoral Project on Violence against Women, Women and Children Affairs Ministry, Mahbuba Panna, deputy secretary of the ICT Department, and Kazi Muheymin-Us-Sakib, associate professor and director, Institute of Information Technology, Dhaka University, were present as guests.
