After announcing a new pay scale for government employees in September, the government is now prepping to form a pay commission for six months to fix salaries of workers in different government industries and organisations.
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs yesterday approved the Labour Ministry’s proposal for a 17-member pay commission with a retired secretary or acting secretary as chairperson. The proposal says one economist, an accounts expert, three representatives from the owners, three representatives from workers’ associations, one representative each from the Ministries of Jute, Industries, Finance, Environment and Planning, and Chairman of the Minimum Wage Board will constitute the proposed pay commission.
State Minister for Labour Ministry Md. Mojibul Haque Chunnu told The Independentthat the search is on for Chairman and other members of the proposed commission.
“We are hoping that we will be able to form the commission by November this year,” he said.
The state minister informed that they are forming the pay commission for workers, after paying heed to their demand for increased salaries and allowances.
Mojibul also informed this correspondent that there are about 1 crore workers in both private and public sectors of the country.
Earlier, on September 7, the government had announced a new pay scale for government employees with highest basic pay of Tk. 78,000 and lowest basic pay of Tk. 8,250, allowing an across-the-grade hike ranging from 91 to 101 per cent.
