Sayed Fida Hossain, 27, is an energetic artist who likes to do figurative painting. The talented freelance painter has participated in numerous exhibitions and has won a number of prestigious awards, including the 3rd place in painting at the 17th International Art Festival & Exhibition 2010 in Gorgan, Iran, and the best award in pen & ink media at the 2010 Annual Art Exhibition, Faculty of Fine Arts, Dhaka University. Y&I’s Sheikh Iraj met with him recently for an exclusive interview.
How long have you been painting and how did you start?
I had a keen interest in painting from a very early age. I used to paint a lot, and it was my sister who motivated me to continue. I remember entering a painting competition where I won the second price. After that, my family started supporting me. I have been working as a professional artist since 2007.
What is art according to you?
To me art is an idea.
Why did you choose acrylic and oil as your medium?
I love to work with both the mediums, but I prefer acylic. Acylic paintings are easy to preserve. I am comfortable with this medium and it goes with my style.
What do you believe is a key element in creating a good composition?
I believe a good composition always depends on the subject. The proper distribution of the subject, balance, or the elements that are used on the surface, are the key.
Do you work as an artist full-time? Describe your typical day. Do you have a routine?
Yes, right now I am a full-time freelance artist. As far as my work routine is concerned, I normally like to work in the afternoon and I love to work at night as well.
How do you come up with ideas/techniques for new paintings?
For an artist, ideas are everything, you have to constantly come up with new ones. When I feel I need new ideas, I take a trip down memory lane and look at my old works.
Has your style changed over the years?
Yes, it has.
Where do you want to see yourself in the next five years?
I want to become successful in what I am doing. Although it’s not that easy, and certainly success doesn’t come overnight, but I will keep on trying.
