Awareness stressed for filariasis-free nation

RANGPUR: There is no alternative to creating mass awareness on the essence of cleanliness and destroying mosquito to ensure hygienic environment for building a filariasis-free Bangladesh, reports BSS.
Mayor of Rangpur City Corporation (RCC) Sarfuddin Ahmed Jhantu delivered the opinion at an advocacy meeting yesterday at City Bhaban hall room as the chief guest.
Chief Executive Officer of RCC Ruhul Amin Khan presided over the meeting arranged for making the upcoming 10-day long mass tablet administering campaign under the National Filariasis Elimination Programme- 2015 successful.
The campaign will be conducted with assistance of the Directorate of Health and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) under the auspices of the World Health Organisation (WHO).
The health officials discussed the reasons behind spread of the curable disease and elaborated effectiveness of the long-term Multi-Drug Therapy treatment method.
They suggested that the common people could get rid of filariasis disease to lead a normal life by reducing mosquito reproduction through adopting preventive measures and maintaining hygiene.
Civil Surgeon Mozammel Hossain said the disease is not a curse or a transmissible one, but instead, it is caused by bites from its germ carrier, which includes four female species of mosquito namely, anopheles, culex, aedes and manosonia.
