Over 50 people, including the officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station and four policemen, were injured in a clash between two groups of people in Habiganj town yesterday over the harassment of a schoolgirl, reports UNB.
Police and witnesses said an altercation took place between the youths of Shayestanagar and Mohanpur areas of the down yesterday morning over the stalking of the schoolgirl of JK & High School allegedly by Nurul Haque, son of Inu Miah of Mohanpur.
At one stage, people of both the areas attacked each other with locally made sharp weapons that led to a series of clashes from around 10am to 1:30pm, leaving at least 50 people injured.
Twenty of the injured, including Sadar Police Station OC Nazim Uddin and four policemen, were taken to Habiganj Sadar Hospital from where two of them shifted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital in a critical condition.
A good number of shops and vehicles were also vandalised during the clash that had also led to the suspension of vehicular movement.
Assistant superintendent of police Maksudur Rahman Monir said police fired rubber bullets and teargas shells to bring the situation under control.
Additional forces have been deployed in the areas to fend off further untoward incident, he added.
