All preparations were made to send citizens of the now defunct Indian enclaves inside Bangladesh to India on Thursday, but it was suddenly postponed and no new date has been fixed, sources in the Lalmonirhat district commissioner’s (DC) office have said.
They said they had taken all measures to send the citizens through the Burimari land port on the Bangladesh side and Chengrabandha on the Indian side, but the Indian authorities told them that it might take place either on November 9 or 16. “It was postponed by the Indian side. They phoned us. But no new date has been fixed. They said it might be on November 9 or 16. I am waiting for a letter from the Indian authorities in this regard,” the Deputy Commissioner of Lalmonirhat district, Md Habibur Rahman, told The Independent.
The DC said 988 Indian citizens, and if any baby is born, will go to India — 195 from Lalmonirhat, 305 from Kurigram and 487 from Panchagrah districts where the Indian enclaves were situated. These people opted for Indian citizenship and took travel passes issued by the Indian authorities in September this year. But no Bangladeshi citizen in 51 enclaves inside India want to come to Bangladesh. These Indian citizens have already sold their land and other assets to Bangladeshi people. After taking travel passes, many of them visited India to see the places and residences of their relatives where they will stay. They will be sent to India in phases, according to sources in the Lalmonirhat DC’s office.
A total of 195 Indian citizens from Latamari, Kharkaria, 115 No Bashkanta, 112 No Bashkanta and 135 &136 Uttar Gotamari enclaves in Lalmonirhat will go to India, while 281 from Dhasiarchora, the largest enclave in Kurigram district, will go to India through the Shahebganj border. Sources said a number of Indian citizens of the defunct enclaves who have travel passes have decided not to go to India.
The transfer of 162 enclaves - 111 in Bangladesh and 51 in India - began from the midnight of July 31 this year, in accordance with the India-Bangladesh Land Boundary Agreement 1974 and Protocol of 2011 to the Land Boundary Agreement.
