Police on high alert after recent killings

Parvez Khan

High-level police officers said yesterday (Wednesday) that directives have been given to the police force across the country, asking them to be alert in the present situation.
They said though the situation of the country does not warrant a "red alert", the police force has been told to remain cautious.
Directives have also been given to beef up security of key-point installations (KPI), and to wear bullet-proof jackets while on duty at check-posts, said officials, on condition of anonymity.
The country has recently witnessed several incidents of killing, like the murder of two foreign nationals, killing of a publisher, and two police personnel in the capital. These incidents have spread panic among people, and have become a cause for concern for the police.
Replying to a query as to why the police have become the target, the chairman of the Criminology Department at Dhaka University, Prof Dr Ziaur Rahman, said: “Targeting the police is nothing new. The police are more committed to this government. So, strategically, terrorists are targeting them.”
A police personnel, not wanting to be named, said several groups are busy spreading panic among people.
Officials said the crime rate is generally low in the country, but what is happening now is undesirable.
Police sources said they have information that a group is actively pursuing a plan to destabilise the country. This information was revealed by those who have been arrested so far.
They added that the perpetrators are mostly unknown faces in the criminal world.
Sources said they spoke to some of the arrested criminals who said they received instructions through a "chain", and the person who is at the end of the chain has no idea about the mastermind's identity.  These perpetrators may target KPIs, such as the airports, diplomatic zones, educational institutions, courts and cinemas.
A former inspector-general said these murders have put up a tough challenge for the police. Although the police are holding meetings to tackle the situation, they are feeling insecure.
Home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said, “These incidents are taking place to destabilise the country. The police and intelligence agencies are working to unearth the incidents. The masterminds will be unmasked soon.”  He said the government is working actively to tackle any such incident.
