Only 13 days after the murder of an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of police at Gabtoli checkpoint in the capital, unidentified assailants stabbed to death a constable and injured another at suburban Ashulia check-post yesterday. The deceased was identified as Mukul Hossain and the injured as Nur-e-Alam of industrial police’s Sripur camp.
Earlier, ASI Ibrahim Mollah was stabbed to death by a youth at Gabtoli checkpoint when a police team was searching the young man's bag at night on October 22.
The policemen at the two checkpoints came under attacks amid a heightened security across the country following the murders of two foreigners, an Italian aid worker in the capital on Sept 28 and a Japanese farmer in Rangpur on Oct 3, of progressive publisher Faisal Arefin Dipan in the capital on Oct 31, and blasts on a Shia procession in the capital that left two killed and dozens others injured.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Nazmul Hasan Kiron said Mukul and Nur-e-Alam were on their way to set up a check-post in Baraipara area of Ashulia on the Dhaka-Tangail highway around 7:45am.
Seven to eight youths reached the spot on board three motorbikes and hacked the two constables with sharp weapons, leaving them critically injured, he added.
Sub-inspector Ekram Hossain of Ashulia police station said a team of the industrial police was on duty in front of Nandan Park.
“Coming from Gazipur’s Kaliakoir side, the attackers started stabbing the two policemen when they were told to stop. The two policemen ran to save their lives and entered a restaurant opposite the park. But the attackers chased and stabbed them again, leaving them critically injured,” he said, adding the attackers fled the scene firing blank shots.
Constables Apple, Pinarul and Imran, who were also in the police team, ran away to save their lives, SI Ekram said quoting witnesses.
However, Kawser Siker, Director of the Ashulia industrial police, said, “The attackers tried to snatch arms from the policemen, which is alarming.” The injured were first taken to the local Fatema Clinic and later shifted to Enam Medical College and Hospital in Savar as their condition deteriorated.
Professor M Rafiqul Islam of the hospital said Mukul had died before he was brought to the hospital.  The condition of Nur-e-Alam, who sustained injuries on the chest, back and neck, is yet be stable and his left hand might have to be amputated, Islam said.
Meanwhile, Sub Inspector Habibur Rahman, who was in-charge of the check post, was closed to the district police line for his ‘negligence’ in duty.  According to the police officials, although Rahman was in-charge of the cheek-post, he was not present there during the incident.
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and acting Inspector General of Police Muklessor Rahman visited Enam Medical College and Hospital.
Talking to reporters, the minister said a particular group is involved in these murders.
“To mislead everybody, they are using the names of the Islamic State, Ansarullah Bangla Team and other militant outfits. This group is against humanity and is trying to stop the war crimes trial. Strict action will be taken against them,” he vowed.
Earlier, five policemen were injured as their vehicle plunged into a roadside ditch after a gun attack by criminals at Ghatura in the suburb of the Brahmanbaria district town on Tuesday night.
The injured were identified as Abdul Awal Bhuiyan, a sub-inspector of sadar police station, and its four constables -- Abul Bashar, Mithun Chandra Nath, Sahidul Islam and Ariful Islam.
Tipped off that a gang of smugglers would take a consignment of contraband items in a private car through the Ghatura area, a team of police set up a check-post at Ghatura on Comilla-Sylhet highway around 11:30pm.
As the policemen signalled a red private car to stop, it sped away ignoring the signal, said police.
However, the policemen chased the criminals in a pickup. Sensing danger, the criminals opened fire on the police vehicle, which feel into the roadside ditch at one stage.
