as supply increases

Prices of winter vegetables have come down as its supply has increased in the kitchen markets of Jhenidah.
Islam Mia, a vegetable trader in Jhendiah TA Bazaar said there is abundant supply of winter vegetables in the markets and their prices  have also been fallen abnormally. Farmers might not get satisfactory prices of their produce, he said further.
He further added that prices of vegetables were high earlier. Now the prices came down  as supply has increased in the kitchen markets.
Deputy director of the Department of Agriculture Extension, Jhenidah Shah Md Akramul Haque said as summer vegetables got damaged due to excessive rain, farmers cultivated early winter vegetables hoping to get satisfactory prices.
In order to recoup the loss, they cultivated winter vegetables in vast areas this year. As a result, nearly two months before the winter season, markets of Jhenidah have been flooded with winter vegetables.
After visiting Vatoi bazaar and Garaganj bazaar in Shailkupa upazila, Chulkanir bazaar and Doulatpur bazaar in Harinakundo upazila, Khalishpur bazaar and Voiroba bazaar in Moheshpur upazila, Elangi bazaar and Kushna bazaar in Kotchandpur upazila, Haat Chadni and Barobazaar in Kaliganj upazila and Dakbangla bazaar and Holidhani bazaar in Sadar upazila of Jhenidah, this correspondent found that spinach was selling at Tk 20, cauliflower at Tk 35 per kilogramme, tomato at Tk 80, cabbage at Tk 30, brinjal at Tk 35 to 40, bottle gourd at Tk 20 to 30 per piece, green papaya at Tk 15 to 20 per kg, bean at Tk 60 to 70 per kg, lady's finger at Tk 30, pumpkin (Chalkumra) at Tk 20 per piece, red amaranth at Tk 20 and raddish at Tk 10 to 15 per kg. Per kilogram green chilli is being sold at Tk 50-60, cucumber at Tk 20 and potato is being sold at Tk 20-25 per kg.
According to sources, at least 20 to 25 trucks loaded with cauliflower, cabbage and radish, are being sent to the markets of Dhaka and Chittagong from the district everyday.
Raza Hossain, a rickshaw puller said they can buy sufficient vegetables when prices are low in the markets.
A van puller Montu said there was huge supply of winter vegetables in the local markets. Prices are also satisfactory, he added.
