Leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), a student wing of ruling Awami League, Rajshahi University (RU) unit allegedly vandalised Nawab Abdul Latif Hall of the university, said an investigation report.
The investigation committee termed it as staged drama against hall administration as they failed to get illegal facilities in the hall.
On September 20, some agitated students vandalised CCTV (close circuit camera), dining room locking the main entrance of the hall claiming that the hall authorities served low quality foods to the residing students of the hall. On that day, a three-member probe committee was formed to investigate the matter.
Chief of the investigation team Saifur Rahman, who is house tutor of the hall, said after checking all information and talking to all employees of the hall, the committee found that leaders and activists of RU BCL vandalised the dining room over silly matter which was pre-planned.
BCL leaders and activists of the hall, led by assistant secretary Shaharia Sajol and Billah, took part in vandalising dining hall after locking the main gate and chanted slogan demanding resignation of hall provost Dr Ekram Hossain. Later, RU proctor Prof Luthfor Rahman rushed to the spot and took the situation under control.
Sources said that different development works, worth Tk two crore, are going on and many of these are under processing. But BCL men did not get any facility from the development works. That is why, to remove hall provost and to get facilities, BCL men staged a drama over trifling matter.
Denying the allegation BCL leader RU unit Shaharia Sajol said hearing the noise in the hall around 1pm on that day he went to the spot and tried to calm the agitated students. He said BCL men were not involved in the incident. However, the CCTV video footage showed that Sajol along with other BCL men vandalised the dining room of the hall. Nawab Abdul Latif Hall provost Dr Ekram Hossain said the authorities will take action against the accused behind the incident and vandalised the university properties. Moreover, they have identified some outsiders, who reside in the hall taking political shelter, played vital role in the incident.
