Meter readers demand job regularisation

Our Correspondent, Rangpur

Meter readers and bill distributors of Power Development Board (PDB) from sixteen districts of Rangpur and Rajshahi divisions formed a human chain in the city yesterday demanding regularisation of their jobs.
They formed the human chain in front of Rangpur Press Club that continued for two hours.
Participants in the human chain alleged that the pitch rate employees (Meter readers and bill distributors) were working for long sixteen to seventeen years under PDB on master roll basis. The amount of wage the pitch rate workers get for collecting meter rates and submitting those to the offices and preparing bills and distributing those to the electricity consumers is very small, they lamented.
In the meantime, master roll employees of different organisations have got their jobs regularised; but unfortunately the PDB pitch rate employees are still lagging behind and passing very measurable life with the families, they observed.
They noted that earlier the PDB chairman had assured them of taking necessary steps in this regard as Pitch Rate Labour Emloyees Okkya Parishad leaders met with him but nothing has been done so far in this regard.
They regretted they fact the despite submitting applications seeking intervention of the Prime Minister, energy minister and other high officials of PDB their crisis remained unresolved. The programme was addressed, among others, by Khalequzzaman, president of Pitch Rate Karmachari Okkya Parishad Rangpur city unit, Jagannath Chandra Roy, secretary of Lalmonirhat unit and Rafiqul Islam, joint secretary.
