Every year the scale of the festivities grow and the idols and the celebrations keep getting bigger and bigger. Kolkata, at this time of the year, is dressed up like a bride with lights and colours. People are busy pandal hopping and having the best food. Though every Durga idol in every pandal in Kolkata has its own specialty, however, it is time for the Golden Goddess at the Santosh Mitra Square, Kolkata. More than 50-60 kgs of gold has been used to make the idol that weighs more than 60 kgs. The idol that also has a lot of gold plating across it costs somewhere between 30-50 lakhs. Can it get any grander? The answer to that question is, yes. Pradeep Ghosh, President of Santosh Mitra Square Sarbojonin Durgotsav Committee said, “Santosh Mitra Square Sarbojonin Durgotsav Committee is 84 years old and this year we have taken the initiative of doing something very unique. The idol of Durga here is made out of pure gold. About 50kg of Gold has been used to make the idol of Durga.”

Even the entire Pandal has been decorated in such a way that it looks like Sheesh Mahal. 10,000 pieces of glass have been used to make the pandal. It is every bit mesmerising and gives a feel of Diwali during Durga Pujo. Even the people at the Padal are in awe of the beauty of the idol. Shreya Banerjee, a regular visitor at the pandal said, “It’s awesome. The decoration is outstanding. We are literally enthralled with the decoration.” Chandrani Sanyal, another viewer at the Puja Pandal said, “Women actually have a weakness for gold but when we come before the idol that has some other power. We are actually enthralled by that power more than that of the gold. It gives a happy feeling to see so many people altogether. It is a wonderful experience altogether.”  The best part is yet to come. This idol will not be immersed in water. It will stay there for people to enjoy its beauty and fall in love with it over and over again.
