About 80 per cent of pucca roads under Bhola municipality area are unfit for vehicular movement. Pedestrians are having a tough time in the absence of any repair work.

Sources say the roads have been in a poor shape for over a year. These roads include Dorga road, Kalibari road, Madrasha road, Gazipura road, Homeopathy road,  Montaj Mia road, Poura Kathali road, Poura Nobipura road, Pondit Bari road, Adarshapara road and Bhola Nutun Bazar road in front of the deputy commissioner’s office.

During a visit to Dorga road under ward no. 6, this correspondent found over half a km road was full of potholes and filled with rainwater.  Jasim uddin, an agriculture officer, told this correspondent that  vehicles could not ply on the road for the last one year due to its terrible condition.

Homeopathy College road remains waterlogged for months due to rains. Thousands of people, including school and college students, avoid the road. It has been alleged that no repair work was done on the 1.6 km-long Madrasha road for over a year. As a result, thousands of pedestrians of two the adjacent unions of Bhola Sadar upazila are having a trying time. Kajal, a local advocate from Montaj Nia road area, said: “In the absence of any repair work of the road, locals face severe inconvenience during rainy season.”

A part of Poura Nobipur road behind the Bhola Sadar Hospital and north of Gorastan Mosque recently caved in. People cross the road every day with extreme difficulty. When contacted, Tariqul Islam, executive engineer of the Bhola municipality, said: “Owing to lack of funds, the pourashava authority couldn’t carry out any repair work.” Municipality mayor Monjurul Islam said: “Dorga road and Homeopathy College road are under the local government department. They will repair the road shortly.”  “Repair works will be done after getting funds,” he added.
