STAFF REPORTER
Oishee ‘parricide’ case
verdict Nov 12

A Dhaka court yesterday fixed November 12 for delivering its verdict in the case filed against Oishee Rahman over killing her parents -- police officer Mahfuzur Rahman and his wife Swapna Rahman -- in 2013.
Judge Md Sayeed Ahmed of Dhaka’s Speedy Trial Tribunal-3 fixed the date after the trial proceedings of the case ended.
The court fixed the date in presence of Oishee and her two friends Asaduzzaman Johnny and Mizanur Rahman Roni, who were charged with the killing.
After the court order, special public prosecutor Mohammad Mahbubur Rahman said they expected that the highest punishment be meted out to the accused.
On the other hand, Advocate Faruk Ahmed, counsel for Oishee, said that the prosecution failed to prove the charges against his client.
The prosecution witnesses did not identify Oishee as killer while their statements were recorded.
On August 16, 2013, Special Branch Inspector Mahfuzur and his wife Swapna were found stabbed to death in their apartment in the capital’s  Malibagh.
Police recovered the bodies two days after the killing. The same day, 19-year-old Oishee surrendered to Paltan Police Station along with their domestic help Sumi.
Mahfuzur’s brother Mohammad Mashiur Rahman Rubel filed a case with the police station on August 17 against Oishee and her two friends Asaduzzaman Jony and Mizanur Rahman Rony.
Abul Khayer, inspector of Detective Branch of police, submitted two separate charge-sheets -- one against Oishee and her two friends on March 9, 2014 and the other against Sumi as she was then a juvenile.
According to the charge sheets, Oishee alone killed her parents, Jony instigated the murders while Rony gave her shelter after the incident.
Sumi was accused of assisting Oishee in concealing the bodies.
The charge sheet also said the couple had been given seven sedatives mixed in tea or coffee before they were killed. The trail in the case for the killing of the couple started on July 8, 2014, through recording depositions of the witnesses.
A total of 39 out of 57 witnesses gave their depositions before the tribunal. The trial against the child domestic help, Sumi, 11, now on bail, is pending with the First Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court of Dhaka, a juvenile court
