AFP, ANKARA: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday called for a new constitution after his ruling party’s weekend triumph at the ballot box.
“Solving the issue of a new constitution was one of the most important messages of November 1,” he said in a televised speech in Ankara. Erdogan has long been pushing for a new constitution to expand the powers of the presidency.
Meanwhile, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s spokesman said on Wednesday, Turkey is considering holding a referendum on plans to expand the powers of presidency into a US-style executive role.
“This is an issue that can be finalised after consulting with the people... If the mechanism to do this is a referendum, then one will be held,” Ibrahim Kalin told reporters in Ankara.
