No renewal licence fees

Barishal City Corporation (BCC) authorities would not impose licence renewal fees for manual rickshaws and vans. Belayet Hossain Bablu, public relations officer of BCC, acknowledging the fact said Mayor Serniabat Sadik Abdullah took the decision to encourage the rickshaw and van pullers to operate their vehicle manually, instead of transforming those in battery-run engines. About imposing restrictions against battery-run three wheelers, the BCC official said as High Court gave instruction against operating those vehicles in metropolitan cities, BCC would not issue or renew licence of those vehicles further.

Mentionable, Barishal Metropolitan Police (BMP) and Barishal City Corporation’s (BCC) from October 1 restricted the battery-run easy bikes and rickshaws plying five main roads in the city for safe road communication and to improve the traffic situation. They also declared to extend the restriction gradually on all roads under BCC area as per direction of the court.

Owners and drivers of the battery-run three wheelers protesting the decision started hunger strike unto death from October 2. They also demanded alternative employment opportunity. Later, they postponed the strike after getting assurances for alternative employment from the authorities concerned.
