Jatiya Party's Rahgir Al Mahi alias Saad Ershad was unofficially declared elected in the Rangpur-3 by-polls yesterday. Saad Ershad, son of late JP Chairman HM Ershad, bagged 58,878 votes while his nearest rival Rita Rahman of BNP polled 16,947. Returning Officer and Regional Election Officer Shahtab Uddin announced the results in the evening. He said the voter turnout in the by-polls was 22.86 per cent. Earlier, voting in the by-election was held peacefully.
Our Correspondent adds: five other candidates also participated in Rangpur-3 by-polls. They are Rita Rahaman of BNP, Tohidur Rahaman Raju of Khelafat-e-Majlish, Saidul Alam of NPP, Kazi Md Sahidulla of Ganaforum and Hossain Mokbul Saharier Asif –an independent candidate.
Visiting several polling centres, the correspondent did not find any large crowd of voters.
Moreover, groups of Hindu community boycotted the polls as they asked the election commission (EC) to shift the election date but received no response from the EC, adds the correspondent.
The constituency fell vacant following the death of Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad on July 14.
The EC announced schedule for the by-polls on September 1. Ruling Awami League withdrew its candidates in support of the Jatiya Party contestant.
