While some of the pacers show their reluctance to play in the four-day matches, Bangladesh left-arm fast bowler Abu Haider Rony on the other side emphasized country's first class cricket saying that fast bowlers’ participation in the four-day matches might help them to improve their fitness and strength in the red-ball cricket.
When asked whether NCL is a proper field to prepare him for the upcoming ICC Test Championship to be played against India in November Rony said, ‘‘Since we are professional players, we have to perform in each sphere of cricket. If we want to sustain in cricket, we have to perform well no matter whether we are playing in the NCL, BCL, Premier League or BPL.’’
‘‘So, I never think of any specific tournament as the gateway to enter into the national side. My job is to perform well for my side and I always try to do that and avail the opportunity, Rony told reporters at the academy ground of the SBNCS yesterday.
While pace bowlers are often underestimated in red-ball cricket especially in home series. In fact, in the last Test match where Bangladesh played with no pacers against Afghanistan, Abu Haider Rony, however, mentioned pacers' inability to bowl for longer periods of time and also their unwillingness to play in the red-ball cricket.
"Spin-friendly wickets are obviously a concern for us but we do have lacking too. Since we cannot bowl at 140 km/h speed and generally bowl at around 130-135 km/h, we need to play more 4-day cricket. Except 3/4 players we show unwillingness to play first class cricket. So, for us who think of Test cricket should focus more on that,’’ he added.
‘‘Apart from that, bowling fitness is also an important aspect. Sometimes bowlers couldn't bowl 4/5 consecutive overs despite achieving 12 in the beep test. So I think bowling 7-8 consecutive overs can be achieved if players participate in the first class cricket,’’ Rony concluded.
While in general spinners were always seen dominating in the NCL or in domestic cricket and fast bowlers struggled on a spinning wicket, Rony though termed it challenging for being a fast bowler but said that he is quite hopeful the wicket will be pacer-friendly in this NCL.
‘‘It is obviously challenging for us as the wickets don’t favour us in the domestic cricket. But if you look at the last 1-2 years’ stats, you will find pace bowlers in the top five as leading wicket takers. So the wickets had improved in the last 2 years where pacers got assistance from the wicket. So I hope it will be same this time around.’’
Although the BCB hardened the fitness rule for players’ participation in the NCL, Rony thinks the new decision taken by the Board along with national team players' inclusion in this NCL will help junior cricketers a lot as they can learn positive things from it. The 23-year-old left arm pacer will play for Dhaka Metropolis along with Mahmudullah Riad in the ensuing National Cricket League (NCL), kicks off October 10.
