At least one person was killed and 45 injured when an engine of a train accidentally pushed the coaches at Kaunia Junction in Rangpur yesterday. The deceased was identified as Apel Mahmud, 20, a student, who died on the spot. The ill-fated Uttarbanga Mail train got into the accident as its driver was changing the engine, said sources. At least 15 people were admitted to Kaunia Upazila Health Complex and Rangpur Medical College Hospital (RMCH) with serious injuries, said fire service officials in Rangpur. Another 30 people who suffered non-critical injuries were given primary treatment, Kaunia Upazila Health Complex doctors told reporters. The engine of the Uttarbanga Mail train accidentally pushed the train at a high speed while it was being changed at the junction around 4:00 pm, damaging its two compartments and causing the fatalities, Fire Service Deputy Director Md Samsuzzoha told reporters yesterday. Bangladesh Railway East Zone has formed a five-member committee to investigate the accident, said sources.
