A group of teachers and students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) yesterday observed daylong strike on the campus demanding resignation of university vice-chancellor Prof Farzana Islam for her alleged involvement in corruption and moral degradation
Protesters under the banner of ‘Jahangirnagar against corruption’ besieged the administrative buildings of the university around 8am that continue till 4 pm.
Around 5:30am the protesters locked all main gates of the administrative buildings of the university and took position there. They also announced to observe strike today.
They also brought out protest procession chanting slogan against JU VC Prof Farzana Islam that paraded different streets on the campus.
Prof Khabir Uddin, a demonstrating teacher, said, “The matter of corruption against VC has come to light. It has been already proved that JU VC gave Tk two crore to BCL leaders and activists from the mega project, worth of Tk 1445 crore”. “She has already lost her legality to hold VC post”, he added.
Due to the strike, all administrative activities were in dead lock and classes and regular examinations in most of the departments were suspended.
As part of the strike, the protestors besieged the transport depot of the university in Bismail area on Tuesday midnight so that no university transport left from the campus to various routes.
Meanwhile, VC-backed teachers’ platform ‘Bangabandhu Shikkhak Parishad’ formed a human chain on the Central Shaheed Minar premises on the campus yesterday to protest against the falsification against VC.
Addressing the programme, the speakers claimed that teachers who have been observing strike, most of them are ‘corrupted’ persons. They also protested the making falsehood against VC. Over 100 teachers took part in the
rally.
