AL leaders happy with drive against casino, graft

AL leaders happy with drive against casino, graft

A section of Awami League leaders (AL), particulary mid-ranking ones, are happy with the party high-ups' latest move to suppress corrupt and unruly leaders and activists of the party and its associate bodies. Those being targetted have been tarnishing the party's image by being involved in illegal activities and irregularities.

Hailing Sheikh Hasina’s latest decision, some AL leaders are openly saying that they are happy with the party president’s decision. They feel the drive should continue till “disturbing elements" are rooted out from the party. Some are even giving statuses on their Facebook pages welcoming the decision.

At a meeting of the Awami League central working committee (ALCWC) on September 14, Sheikh Hasina had decided to take action against party leaders and workers involved in corruption and irregularities.

At that meeting, Hasina, who is also the organisational chief of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), removed its president Rezwanul Haque Chowdhury Shovon and general secretary Golam Rabbani from their respective posts because of their involvement in corruption and various irregularities. She had also expressed her annoyance with some Jubo League leaders and criticised them for their illegal activities.

On September 18, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Jubo League's Dhaka South organising secretary Khaled Mahmud Bhuiyan for running a “casino business” in the Fakirerpool area of the capital. Jubo League central committee leader SM Golam Kibria Shamim was arrested on Friday for his involvement in various illegal activities.

Several people, including AL leaders, were arrested in the last few days from the capital and elsewhere with a huge amount of cash, gold, liquor and arms. Talking to the media on Friday, AL general secretary Obaidul Quader said they are not embarrassed by the allegations raised against  leaders and workers of the party’s associate bodies.

“We’re happy as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has become more popular with the ongoing action against corruption and irregularities. The drive has brightened the image of the party and the government,” he explained. He also said the drive against corruption and irregularities will be carried out across the country.

Seeking anonymity, a central committee leader of the AL told this correspondent that they are happy with the Prime Minister’s decision. Those who are involved in casino business and gambling should be brought to justice.

No one should be spared as they have been tarnishing the image of the government as well as the party, he added.  “Today I am happy because action has started,” said Mir Tofazzal Hossain in his Facebook status after the RAB arrested Jubo League leader Khaled Mahmud Bhuiyan.

Tofazzal Hossain is a member of the AL’s central sub-committee on industry and commerce affairs.

Some young leaders of the AL said they are happy with the ongoing drive, as many intruders have made it to the party during the last 10 years and they are tarnishing the party’s image. The latest drive will oust them.

Some of them are posting status quoting Sheikh Hasina’s statement that no one will be spared if found involved in corruption.

Talking to this correspondent, AL joint general secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif said the drive against corrupt and unruly leaders has been started across the country.

Besides, the party has so far issued show-cause notices to 160 local leaders for contesting against party nominated candidates in the latest local government elections.

The party has also decided to take action against party lawmakers and ministers who had backed the rebel leaders.

However, some leaders of the ruling party seem to be feeling uneasy.

AL lawmaker from the Chattogram-12 constituency and Jatiya Sangsad whip, Shamsul Hoque Chowdhury, on Saturday said drives at the country’s sporting clubs in the name of curbing gambling cannot be

accepted.
