The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) yesterday sent a letter to the Bangladesh Road and Transport Authority (BRTA) seeking a list of private cars or jeeps having capacity of 2500 cc and above, which were registered with the BRTA over the period of last five years. A letter signed by ACC Director General (Special Investigation Unit) ANM Al Firoz was sent requesting the BRTA chairman to give information about such private vehicles registered with the BRTA on an emergency basis.
The national anti-graft authority requested the BRTA to deliver detailed information about the luxury cars including – engine/chassis numbers, model, dates of import, registration number and dates, prices, documents for VAT and other taxes as well as names and addresses of owners of those vehicles.
The Commission asked the BRTA to deliver the required information as soon as possible. The ACC sought the information at a time when the members of law enforcing agencies have been conducting series of raids on illegal casinos in Dhaka and elsewhere, discovered gambling machines and instruments, liquor, huge amount of money and arrested a number of people including Juba League leader Khaled Mahmud Bhuiyan.
According to the BRTA official data, a total of 18,227 new cars were registered with the BRTA in 2018 while the number was 21,959 in 2017 and 20,304 in 2016 with a total of 21,062 new cars got registration in 2015 and 14,699 in 2014.
