BCB gets ‘huge response’ from corporate houses to sponsor Bangabandhu BPL

To celebrate the centenary birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) took an initiative to organise the upcoming edition of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) after the name of Bangabandhu that got huge response from the corporate houses and companies.

The BCB has received the expression of interests (EoI) applications from a total of six corporate houses and companies, who showed their keen interests to sponsor this special BPL.

BCB President Nazmul Hassan Papon told media while he was leaving Mirpur in the aftermath of the tri-nation final between hosts Bangladesh and visiting Afghanistan at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Tuesday.

“I have heard that six interested candidates have submitted their Expression of Interest (EoI) applications,” said Nazmul Hassan Papon.

“But I am yet to see it. As it was the final day today, so I don’t see it,” Papon told media. “Hopefully I could tell something final within tomorrow or day after tomorrow,” he added.

Of them, the names of the two certain organizations-Akhtar Group and Tiger IT-have been making the rounds in the cricket community. Both companies submitted their EOIs after the board floated their notice of EOI for a team sponsor on September 17 with the deadline of submission for September 22.

But the BCB is yet to declare the final number of submissions which will be finalised within the next two days what the BCB president indicated clearly.

The BCB boss had come to the decision at the back of the recent differences between the BPL Governing Council and the BPL franchises, who gave some suggestions and demands that were really difficult to accept for the board during their tea-coffee invitation session.

The time in hand was not quite enough to implement the new tournament by-laws rather the tournament should come in full strength in it 2020-21 season. The board had decided to bring in ‘sponsors’ for the team instead of the franchisees and would manage single handedly both the tournament and guide the teams.

However, it was learned from the BCB insiders that none of the six existing BPL franchisees have submitted EOIs to participate in the tournament as team sponsors though Comilla Victorians and Rangpur Riders along with Dhaka Dynamites expressed their eagerness to be a part with this special BPL in any kind.

The forthcoming edition of the Twenty20 blockbuster tournament will be rolled onto the ground in due time. The BCB earlier announced that the ensuing BPL will begin in December 6.

Expressing his sorrowness for the spectators and supporters not to enjoy the final encounter of the tri-nation that ended with sharing the trophy between the two teams, Nazmul Hassan Papon said that it would be better if the final match could be held in Mirpur.

He also said that there was no rains in weather forecast after 6:00pm but it has not been happened actually they have no control over the nature.

“We wanted that the match is held. There is win-loss in the game but we had a notion that as we won the last two back-to-back matches, we are in winning spree our team will play better cricket,’ he said.

“I sat with the team especially coach and captain among all. They are all confident of winning the final. That’s not the big issue. What I feel worse is that hundreds of spectators with their family and their child appeared here in Mirpur stadium to see the final match from evening and sat in the stadium braving the rains, I feel sad for them,” he also said.

“Not only that, so many phone calls have come to me aboard who were wake-up to see the match. But the match is not held. Basically I feel very sad for the spectators and supporters,” he added.

“It is not that rain will not be held in reserve day because the rains have been dropped round the day. It’s difficult to say. The report of the weather what we had here having no rains from 6:00pm. Unfortunately the rains have been poured down there is nothing to do for it,” he concluded.
