At least 11,315 students of 76 government primary schools in Kalapara upazila are attending classes despite the fear of a building collapse.
Of these, 23 school buildings have been identified as extremely hazardous, but only two of them have been declared ‘abandoned’.
The upazila education office says the higher authorities have been informed about the state of the buildings through the district education office.
The pillars, beams and ceilings of Kathalpara and West Nachanpara Government Primary School buildings have collapsed. Temporary tin-shed classrooms have been set up to hold classes in these two schools.
Upazila education office sources say there are 173 government primary schools in the upazila. Of them, the department concerned has listed 76 school buildings as risky and 23 school buildings as hazardous. A list has been sent to the higher authorities through the district primary education office for remedial measures.
The sources also say that the more risky government school buildings are: Pearpur Amena Khatun Govt Primary School, Nishanbaria Machuhakhali Govt Primary School, South Khapravanga Govt Primary School, North Nishanbaria Govt Primary School, South Kamarpur Govt. Primary School, Daserhowla Govt. Primary School, Golubuni Govt. Primary School, Patua Govt. Primary School, Nishanbaria Govt. Primary School, Londa Govt. Primary School, Nizashibaria Govt. Primary School, South Golbunia Govt. Primary School, Dhankhali Gazi Safiur Rahman Govt. Primary School, Baduratli Govt. Primary School, East Tiakhali Govt. Primary School, North Chakmaya Govt. Primary School, Newapara govt. Primary School, Kathalpara govt. Primary School, Mostafapur Govt. Primary School and Nizkata RK Govt. Primary School.
Wall and roof collapses have been reported recently from Kathalpara Government Primary School at Chakmaia union.
Ayub Ali, headmaster of the school, said: “The school was established in 1988. There are currently four teachers and about 100 pupils. The building had not been renovated after its construction in FY1998–1999. The locals are now very upset about their children studying in the risky school building.”
Kamruzzaman, assistant teacher of the school, said: “They have been asking the authorities to resolve the crisis soon and restore the school's normal environment.”
Md Jalal Uddin, guardian of a pupil, said: “The building was constructed using low-quality construction materials. So, the condition of the building has deteriorated. We are afraid of sending our children to school.”
Md Abul Bashar, upazila acting education officer, said: “Seventy-six out of 173 school buildings in the upazila are under threat.
Of these, 23 school buildings have been identified to be extremely hazardous. The higher authorities have been requested to take appropriate action.”
