A court sent 49 activists of BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami, accused in assistant presiding officer Zobaidul Haque murder case, to jail yesterday after rejecting their bail prayers.
Court sources said a gang of 100 to 150 men along with sharp weapons and sticks swooped on Molani Cheprikura Government Primary School polling centre in sadar upazila at around 8:45pm on January 4, 2014.
The attack left assistant presiding officer Zobaidul Haque, 55, also a demonstrator at Salondar College, and two police constables critically injured.
The injured were taken to Thakurgaon Sadar Hospital where the duty doctor declared Zobaidul dead.
Police constable Zaherul Islam filed a murder case in this connection accusing 150/200 people with sadar police on January 5.
The investigating officer pressed charges against 123 people on August 14, 2014 and the court issued arrest warrants against them.
Of the accused, 59 were sent to jail earlier.
Forty nine out of 64 charge-sheeted accused appeared before the additional district and session’s judge court yesterday afternoon, seeking bail. Judge Haydar Ali rejected the bail prayers and sent them to jail.
