The intensive care unit (ICU) at Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital (SZRMCH) in Bogra has been lying idle for the past 10 years due to the lack of trained manpower and necessary equipment.
Admitting the problem, hospital director Brig. Gen. AKM Mustafa Kamal Pasha said the government has taken an initiative to improve the situation.
“A senior official from the health directorate had recently visited the ICU in order to check for the equipment and manpower required, following a decision of the ministry concerned,” he added.
The construction of the ICU, along with other facilities like oxygen systems and air conditioners, was completed a long time ago, but no initiative was taken to start the unit. SZRMCH authorities have sent several letters to the director general (DG) of health to take necessary action in the past 10 years.
Dr Rezaul Karim Juwel, head of the orthopaedic department, said most of the critical patents who come to the hospital have to be shifted to Dhaka or Rangpur due to the shortage of ICU facilities.
“On an average, 20 patients have to be shifted from the orthopaedic department to Dhaka per month only because of the ICU problem,” he said.
Dr Md. Mojibar Rahman Selim, head of the cardiology department, said the cathlab department was not functioning properly because of the absence of ICU facilities in the hospital.
“Most of the time, we have to refer patients with head injuries and cardiac problems to other hospitals to preclude risk of death,” he said.
Hospital sources admitted that patients in different departments have been dyeing regularly because of the dearth of ICU facilities.
They said three patients in the gynaecology department—Bithi Begum, Rebaya and Ambia—had died recently.
