The government yesterday suspended BNP-backed Khulna City Corporation (KCC) elected Mayor Moniruzzaman Moni as he has been charged with criminal offences.
With the suspension of Khulna City Mayor Mohammed Moniruzzaman Moni, all but two of the six BNP-backed city mayors have so far been removed because of criminal proceeding against them.
A source at the Local Government Division wishing anonymity said that they issued a circular on Moni’s suspension on Monday as a court accepted his name in the chargesheet of criminal cases.
According to Section 12 (1) of Local Government (City Corporation) Law, a public representative can be removed from his office, if the police submits a charge sheet against him or her in any criminal case.
Moni has been suspended as per the Local Government (City Corporation) Act, the official said. The law says any one of the panel mayors of the KCC could be made the acting mayor. Moni was elected KCC mayor defeating ruling Awami League-backed candidate Talukdar Abdul Khaleque in the city polls held in June, 2013.
On June 11 this year, a local court accepted charge sheets against 56 people, including Moni, in two criminal cases over arson and attacks on law enforcers.
Earlier, Sylhet City mayor Ariful Huq, Rajshahi City mayor Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul and Gazipur City Mayor MA Mannan were also suspended on the similar grounds.
Two other BNP-backed city mayors, Ahsan Habib Kamal of Barisal and Monirul Haque Saku of Comilla, are also facing more than one criminal cases.
Rajshahi City Mayor Mosaddeq Hossain was removed on May 7 and replaced by Awami League-backed Councillor Nizamul Azim. Mosaddeq has been implicated in 12 cases, including the case of killing police constable Shidhartha Roy. The Rajshahi mayor went into hiding after several cases were filed against him.
Sylhet City Mayor Ariful Huq was dismissed on January 7. He has been implicated in two cases.
Gazipur City Mayor Prof MA Mannan was removed from his post on August 19. He was replaced by Awami League-backed Councillor Asadur Rahman.
Actions are being taken against the elected city mayors by filing cases against them and accusing them of involvement in hartal, blockade and setting of vehicles on fire during the anti-government movement, BNP leaders alleged.
