Road crash kills 2 in Munshiganj

UNB, Munshiganj

An accident on the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway left two motorcyclists dead yesterday morning. The deceased were identified as Zakir Hossain, 24, son of Mostafa; and Mohammad Miraz, 18, son of Mannan of Haziganj upazila of Chandpur.

Police said the accident took place at Alipura in Gazaria upazila. Kabir Hossain Khan, in-charge of Bhaberchar Highway police camp, said Zakir and Miraz were critically injured when their motorbike skidded off the road after hitting a road island.

They were taken to Bhaberchar Upazila Health Complex where doctors pronounced Zakir dead and shifted Miraz to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

Miraz was pronounced dead when he was taken to DMCH.

Youth’s wrists severed in Chapainawabganj

UNB, Chapainawabganj

Some miscreants severed a youth's wrists at Ujirpur in Shibganj upazila here early Thrusday.

The victim has been identified as Rombel Hossain, 28, son of Khodabox of Ranihati bazar area in the upazila.

Abdus Salam, uncle of the victim and a local Awami League leader, said Romel and Ujirpur Union Parishad chairman Foyej had been at loggerhead for long over establishing supremacy in a ferry ghat of the area.

Family soruces said when Rombel along with his two friends was returning home several people waylaid him near Ujirpur Beribadh and asked him to meet Ujirpur Union Parishad Chairman Foyej.

As he went to the chairman's office his people covered his eyes and severed his wrists of both hands and left him near Beribadh area, they alleged.

On information, family members rescued him and took him to Chapainawabganj Sadar Hospital.

Atikul Islam, officer-in-charge of Shibganj Police Staiton, said the incident might have taken place following previous enmity but no complaint was lodged in this regard.

Child dies after falling into electric trap for foxes

UNB, Sirajganj

A child died after reportedly falling into an electric trap set for catching foxes at Faridpur village of Salonga upazila here on Wednesday.

The deceased was identified as Amena Khatun, 5, daughter of Alamin of the village.

Abdul Jabbar, local union parishad chairman, said one Abdus Sattar set an electric trap at his chicken farm in the village to catch foxes on Wednesday.

The accident took place when Amena and another child, who were playing just beside the trap, came in touch with a live wire. Amena died on the spot while the other girl managed to survive the accident, Jabbar added.

2 minors drown in Panchagarh

UNB, Panchagarh

Two minors drowned in ponds near their homes as the ‘Silent Killer’ of Bangladeshi children struck the Sadar Upazila of the district on Wednesday.

One of the deceased Tajimuddin, 4, was the son of Saiful Islam, former member of Dolopara area under Chalhat union of Sadar Upazila of the district.

The other victim, one-and-half years old Jannatul Ferdous, was the daughter of businessman Rezaul Islam of Bokshipara area of the same union. Local people and family members informed that Tajimuddin while playing fell into a pond adjacent to their house at noon. The locals recovered the body after about three hours.

On the other hand, Jannatul Ferdous also fell in to a pond near their home. Family members after recovering her body from the pond immediately took her to Panchagarh Modern Sadar Hospital where the attending physician declared her dead.

A 2017 study published in esteemed medical journal The Lancet said drowning accounts for an astonishing 43 percent of all deaths in the 1-4 age group in Bangladesh.
