While leg-spinner Aminul Islam made a dream debut, claiming 2-18 against Zimbabwe, showing a control and discipline, former chief selector Faruk Ahmed urged the current selection panel led by Minhajul Abedin Nannu to be patient on him. He said the young leg-spinner should be given long run to prove him even if he plays some bad matches. “Aminul has to play match and he has to play many matches in the domestic league,” Faruk said here yesterday.
“He has to play against weak opponents and he has to practice with the national team regularly. To be a leg-spinner is not an easy task. He has to be given the time to adjust as he has the talent in him. He doesn’t possess big turn but he has the ability to land the ball in right areas. When he will play against strong team, he could be taken in disdain but the selection panel shouldn’t lose faith on him. If we don’t give him the enough chances, he won’t bring success.”
Before Aminul’s arrival, Bangladesh got some leg-spinners who now went down in the lane of memory. In Bangladesh’s domestic cricket, the leg-spinners were not entertained because there is belief that the wrist spinners would leak runs. Therefore the player like Jubair Hossain Likhon who showed his talent didn’t get chance to play enough matches in domestic cricket and it made an adverse impact when he played the International cricket. Likhon is now out of the team.
According to Faruk, the selection panel’s impatience on the players didn’t come good for Bangladesh team and now they paid it off, tasting recurring defeats across the format. ”It’s like we are forming the team or trial and error basis,”Faruk said.
“A team can have bad performance or good performance that is quite natural. But at that time we have to look at the process of the team. Some question have been raised about team selection and it is quite natural,” he said.
“Everybody cannot perform. I feel selection responsibility should be given to someone who can be accountable. In recent times we are not getting any example of an explanation of whom we are selecting or whom we leave out. There is some restlessness when team loses. As we are not following the right process of selection we get restless. We get panic if we lose one or two matches,” he remarked.
