Rajshahi: Speedy Trial Tribunal in Rajshahi yesterday awarded 11 people lifetime imprisonment for their involvement in killing of Awami League leader Fazlar Rahman Fonu, chairman of Kolom Union Parishad in Singra upazila of Natore.
Justice Golam Ahmed Kholilur Rahman of the tribunal passed the order around 12:00pm.
Of the total 18 accused, 13 were present in the dock at that time.
Five of the accused were tried in absentia.
The tribunal also acquitted seven more accused as their involvement in the killing could not be proved. The convicts getting life term are Ibrahim Khalik Fatik, organising secretary of Singra upazila unit BNP, Faridul Islam Poltu, Abdul Karim, Moyen Uddin, Mohammad Motaleb, Shamsul Islam, Raijul Hasan Ripon, Mohammad Ali, Mohammad Nazim, Noyon Hossain and Alamgir Hossain.
According to case summary, Fazlar Rahman Fonu was hacked to death by some miscreants in broad daylight in his area on January 18, 2014.
Following the incident, Mainul Haque Chonu, brother of Fonu, filed a murder case with Singra police station against 18 people, including Ibrahim Khalik Fatik, organising secretary of Singra upazila BNP. After a long period of judicial process the Speedy Trial Tribunal pronounced the verdict on Monday.
