Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad yesterday asked the election officials of Chittagong to take tough vigilance on Rohingyas so that their names could not be included in the electoral roll.
“Any citizen of Bangladesh can include his or her name in the voter list. Special committees were formed in the Chittagong Hill Tracts for this, said CEC, while talking to the reporters after attending a view-exchange meeting with Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) mayor, councilors, councilors of reserved seats for women and other government high-officials at the city’s Circuit House auditorium yesterday.
The meeting was also attended, among others, by Election Commissioner Abdul Mobarak, CCC mayor AJM Nasir Uddin, Chittagong Divisional Commissioner Mohammad Abdullah, Chittagong Deputy Commissioner Mesbah Uddin, CMP Additional Commissioner AKM Shahidur Rahman, Election Commission secretary Sirajul Islam and Regional Election Officer Abdul Baten.
“We have held the meeting in Chittagong for two purposes. First of all, we would like to extend our cooperation to the women voters regarding registration. The other purpose is to exclude the names of the dead from the electoral roll. The CCC mayor has assured us of extending his all-out cooperation in this regard,” said the CEC.
To a question, the CEC replied, “Excluding the names of the dead from the voter roll was part of an ongoing process.
However, the necessary correction is not made as per the requirement.
We are conducting a special drive in Chittagong so that none is excluded from the voter roll. Updating the electoral roll is a continuous process.”
“The doors of the EC are open to the excluded people. We would like to present smart cards free from any faults,” added Rakibuddin.
Referring to the local body polls under party banner, the CEC said, “It is the business of the parliament to enact laws. It is the business of the Local Government Ministry to enact the laws regarding the polls. We are supposed to act in accordance with the constitution and the laws of the country.”
“We have taken initiative to hold elections in December. The elections to the municipalities of the country will be held as per schedule.
The polls of the municipalities will be held as per laws effective on the day of the declaration of schedules,” added the CEC.
