Youth stabbed dead in Ctg

A young man was stabbed to death by some miscreants at Pathania Goda in Chandgaon area in the city on Sunday night. The deceased was identified as Mohammad Ziad, 23, son of Mohammad Selim.
Quoting family members of the victim, Abul Kalam, officer-in-charge of Chandgaon Police Station, said Ziad’s elder brother runs a cable TV operating business.
On Sunday night, Ziad had an altercation with some youths as they demanded extortion from him. At one stage, they stabbed him indiscriminately, leaving him critically injured. Later, he was taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
Sub-registrar suspended over graft allegations

Government on Sunday suspended sub-registrar Subrata Kumar Das of Shahjadpur, Sirajganj, over allegations of professional misconduct and graft and attached him to district registrar office.
“Decision has been taken to file divisional case against Subrata Kumar Das over allegations of misconduct and graft. As the allegations brought against the accused officer are serious, so it will not be proper to keep him in his office for the sake of thorough investigation,” a Law and Justice Division notification said. Signed by Law and Justice Division Secretary Md Golam Sarwar, the notification further said during his suspension period, the sub registrar will get allowances accordingly.
Five yaba ‘peddlers’ held

A Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-1) team detained five youths over their alleged involvement in contraband yaba dealing from Kathora area in the city on Sunday night.
The detainees were identified Mohammed Sazzad Hossain, 22, of Kathora area of the city, Mohammed Anowar Hossain,25, of Krishnapur village in Chandpur, Mohammed Khairul Islam alias Sumon of Kishorganj, Mohammed Sohel Mia, 27 of Salna area in Gazipur and Mohammed Babul Miah in Bhola.
Company Commander of RAB-1 in Gazipur Purabari camp Lt Commander Abdullah Al-Mamun said, in a raid they detained them from the spot. They also seized 380 pieces of yaba tablets, Tk 12,570 and five mobile phone sets from their possession. The RAB sources said in an interrogation, the detainees admitted their crimes.
Worker killed in road mishap

A construction worker died when he was crushed under the wheels of a truck in Mirpur area yesterday.
The deceased was identified as Ahsan Gazi, 50, hailed from Debdoyar village in Paikgacha upazila of Khulna district. Bacchu Miah, sub-inspector of Dhaka Medical College Hospital Police outpost, confirmed the matter to BSS. Police said Ahsan was crushed under the wheels of the truck while he along with other workers was digging the earth beside an under construction building in Mirpur area.
Critically injured Ahsan was first taken to a local hospital immediately and subsequently transferred to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital. The on-duty doctors at the emergency department declared him dead there.
182 institutions fined for selling adulterated foods
BSS, Dhaka
The Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection recently fined 182 institutions in the city a total of Taka 13,57,300 for selling adulterated foods and violating the weight and measure standards.
The drives were led by 33 officials from 3 district level offices. On Wednesday, ‘Butterfly Marketing limited’, ‘Walton’ and ‘Swapno’ super shop were fined Taka 50,000 each for not specifying MRP in the packets of the goods in the capital.
Also, 30 local markets across the country were monitored during the drives. 61 institutes were fined a total of Taka 2, 38,500 for selling and storing expired foods, adulteration, raising prices, fabricating in weights and measures and not maintaining hygiene or safety standards.
