ACC UNDER-19 ASIA CUP

Bangladesh falls 5 runs short

SPORTS REPORTER, Dhaka

Bangladesh Under-19 yet again stumbled at the close door of clinching a major title when they lost to India Under-19 Cricket Team by five runs in the low-scoring but exciting final of the ACC Under-19 Asia Cup at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo yesterday.

The youth Tigers earlier failed to overcome a combined Indian effort in the tri-nation series by six wickets in the high-scoring thriller in England.

This time the Tigers cruised into the semifinal with an all-important win against 2017 Asia Cup Champions Afghanistan but the downpours spoiled their high-octane clash and settled the final meet against six-time Asia Cup Champions for the first time in Asia Cup history.

In reply to a very low total of 107, junior Tigers had a similar start like India as the top four batsmen were sent back to the pavillion inside first five overs of the match scoring just 16 runs on the board.

At 51 for 6, when youth Tigers' were in all sorts of trouble, skipper Akbar Ali and Mrittunjoy Chowdhury tried to rebuild the innings with a seven wicket 27-run stand to keep the Tigers back in the hunt before rain delayed the match for a while. Shortly after the delay, both the batsmen fell on 78 in a span of three deliveries to make the 107-run chase to an even more difficult one.

Man of the match Atharva Ankolekar, who took a five-for, provided the important breakthrough claiming the wicket of Akbar Ali while Sushant Mishra removed Mrittunjoy on the same score.
