The ruling Awami League will hold its 21st national council session on December 20-21 this year. The decision was taken yesterday at a meeting of the Awami League Central Working Committee (ALCWC), the highest policymaking body of the party, with party President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair. “The ALCWC unanimously decided to hold the party’s upcoming national council on December 20-21,” said AL Joint General Secretary Jahangir Kabir Nanak to The Independent over phone after the meeting. During her introductory speech, Awami League President Sheikh Hasina asked the party central
leaders to complete all pending council sessions of various bodies ahead of the national council. She also directed the leaders to play a more responsible role in organising the party.
Beginning at 7:00pm at the prime minister’s official residence Ganabhaban, the meeting also discussed the country’s prevailing political situation and other issues on the agenda.
Party insiders said AL chief Sheikh Hasina is like to bring major changes in the party’s central body during the ensuing national council session as no major changes
were introduced in the last three councils.
Awami League held its 20th national council session on October 22-23 in 2016 at Suhrawardi Udyan in the city.
Party insiders said as the party is in power for the third consecutive term, and this time it is working on holding a colourful, prestigious and unprecedented council session.
Taking to this correspondent, AL Presidium Member Lt. Col. (retd) Muhammad Faruk Khan said the party has started issuing show-cause notices to those who contested polls flouting party decision with regard to the recently-held local government elections.
Those accused were given three weeks to explain their positions. “We will take action against them or may forgive them after receiving their explanations,” he noted.
Other issues discussed at the meeting included chalking out programmes marking Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s 72nd birthday, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s youngest son late Sheikh Russel’s 55th birth anniversary and observing the Jail Killing Day in a befitting manner.
