‘Graft in Mega Project’

Blockade continues at JU

Our Correspondent, JU

A group of teachers and students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) laid siege to the administrative building for the second consecutive day demanding a judicial inquiry into JU VC over the allegations of corruption and unplanned development under the mega project worth Tk 1,445 crore on the campus.

Under the banner of ‘Jahangirnagar Against Corruption’, over 100 protesters gathered at two administrative buildings around 8am and staged sit-in by locking the main entrances. The protesters continued their blockade till 4 pm, ending the office hour.

Meanwhile, JU Pro VC (Administration) Professor Amir Hussain, Pro VC (Academic) Professor Md Nurul Alam with others teachers and officials rushed to the spot to discuss with the protesters around at 10 am.  However, the discussion was not fruitful as the protesters said that they will only sit for the discussion if the authorities meet their three points demand.  Their three points demand are – judicial inquiry into graft in mega project, review of master plan and relocate three male halls from Shantiniketan area.

One of the protester Ashikur Rahman, who is the president of Jahangirnagar Cultural Alliance said, ‘We have raised three point demands considering welfare of the university and our demands are logical. We will sit with the university authorities if they assure us for meeting the demands. Otherwise no meeting will be fruitful’.

Meanwhile, the demonstrator brought out a procession supporting their blockade that paraded different streets on the campus. They announced to continue their blockade today.

Different factions of teachers have expressed solidarity with the movement of the students.  Over 20 teachers from left leaning, a faction of Awami League and BNP backed teachers went to JU administrative building for expressing solidarity with the protesters.

However, the university authorities are trying to solve the on-going deadlock situation on the campus by discussing with the demonstrators.  “We have talked to the demonstrators and urged them to sit with us to resolve the problem. We expect that we will resolve the matter very soon”, said JU Proctor Feroz Ul Hasan.

Due to the blockade, all administrative works were kept postpone.
