Rift within the Jatiya Party (JP) has widened over appointment of leader of the opposition in Parliament. The tussle is between Raushan Ershad and her brother-in-law, GM Quader. Their supporters want their leader for the post. Party co-chairperson Raushan called a meeting at her Gulshan residence yesterday (Wednesday), where only four lawmakers turned up.
Two letters, one from each group, were sent to Parliament Speaker, Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, requesting her to make Quader and Raushan Ershad leader of the opposition. Some JP leaders fear that the party is likely to split over leadership and the post of opposition leader.
On Tuesday, a group of Jatiya Party lawmakers submitted a letter, signed by 15 MPs, to the Speaker, requesting her to make Quader leader of the opposition. Another letter, sent the same day, urged her to appoint Raushan Ershad to the post. Party presidium member Mujibul Haque Chunnu carried the letter that supported Raushan for the post.
The JP's senior lawmaker, Kazi Feroz Rashid, along with four other MPs, sent a letter to the Speaker’s office over appointment of Quader as opposition leader. Differences between followers of Quader, Ershad’s younger brother and JP chairman, and supporters of Ershad’s wife, Raushan, have now widened.
According to sources, lawmakers Barrister Anisul Islam Mahmud, Mujibul Haque Chunnu, Fakhrul Imam, Liakaot Hossain Khoka and Raushan Ara Mannan attended yesterday’s meeting at Raushan’s residence. The party co-chiarperson Raushan has summoned an emergency parliamentary meeting at her residence today (Thursday).
There are 22 JP members in Parliament. Of them, 15 MPs are with Quader, and seven for Raushan, according to sources.
The post of leader of the opposition has been vacant since the death of JP chairman, HM Ershad, on July 14.
According to party sources, sending a letter to make Quader leader of the opposition is nothing but putting pressure on Raushan’s group.
The JP parliamentary party will meet before the Parliament session begins on September 8 to select leader of the opposition. After the meeting, they will write to the Speaker about whom to appoint.
