A 13-year-old girl became the latest victim of dengue at the Millennium Heart and General Hospital in the capital yesterday. She has been identified as Isra Taskin Asmita, 13, an eighth grader in Viqarunnisa Noon School and College. After being taken to a private hospital, she was later transferred to the Millennium Heart and General Hospital on August 26.

She was on life support for six days, said Amanat Mawla, father of the deceased.  Isra used to live with her parents in the Azimpur area of the capital. However, the number of dengue patients admitted to different hospitals across the country has shown an upward trend.

A total of 820 dengue patients were admitted to various hospitals across the country in the last 24 hours, while the number of admissions on Tuesday was 783. About 95 per cent of the dengue patients admitted to different hospitals across the country have been released from hospitals after treatment, according to health officials.

Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) control room data shows that the number of recorded cases this year has hit 73,565 so far. Among them, at least 52,636 were hospitalised in August alone. A total of 69,785 patients have already been released hospitals.

Among the new patients admitted yesterday, a total of 345 patients were hospitalised in Dhaka and 475 in hospitals outside the capital.  The number of admitted patients currently undergoing treatment in government and private hospitals combined is 3,588.

In total, 1,989 patients are currently receiving treatment in 41 government and private hospitals in the capital, whereas a total of 1,599 patients are undergoing treatment outside the capital. The DGHS has so far analysed 96 out of 192 cases of death and confirmed 57 deaths to have been caused by the mosquito-borne disease.
