Around 224 students of the Dormopur Government Primary School on the outskirts of Maijdee town under Sadar upazila, in Noakhali, have been attending classes in the building’s corridors and under the open sky.
The school has two buildings. But the upazila education departments declared one of them, which had four classrooms, as ‘risky’ in 2011 because for its dilapidated condition. As a result of a shortage of space, the school authorities are forced to hold classes in the open.
The other building has two rooms: one is used as a classroom and the other is meant for teachers. Some teachers said this one classroom was being is used for the students of six classes (pre-primary and Classes I to IV) having 224 students.
“As a result, we are bound to take classes in the corridor and in open spaces,” they said.
The teachers say conditions become really bad during the rainy season with students getting soaked and books being damaged. The field of the school gets waterlogged, posing a threat to the children.
During a recent visit to the school, this correspondent found that students sat in the corridor. Rahana Bin ta Shahad, a teacher, told The Independent that classes were being held under great risk.
Taptee Rani Devi, another teacher, said students were unable to concentrate due to the accommodation problem.
When contacted, headmistress Shamimera Begum said the school was built in the 1999–2000 financial year. After 2010, the building developed leaks. As a result water used to drip from the ceiling.
“In 2011, I joined this school and saw the poor condition of the building. I personally met the upazila education officer, district education officer and officers of the education engineering department, seeking repairs or a new building. But nothing has been done so far,” she said.
She said she had also sent several letters to the higher authorities.
The school has four teachers. Last year, two students got talent scholarship. The school also recorded 100 per cent pass.
The local people say the upazila primary education authorities declared one of the school buildings abandoned in 2011. Since then, classes were being held in the open.
District education officer Md Saidul Islam told The Independent, “I did not know that classes are being taken in the corridor. I will visit the school and take necessary steps to draw the attention of the higher authorities,” he said.
