1 more dengue patient dies, 902 admitted

A woman became the latest victm of dengue at Enam Medical College and Hospital in Savar on the outskirts of Dhaka early yesterday. The deceased was identified as Khadija Begum, 42, wife of Habibur Rahman. She breathed her last at intensive care unit (ICU) of the hospital early yesterday, Yousuf Ali, duty manager of the hospital, told the media. “Khadija was diagnosed with dengue some days ago. She was staying at her residence. As her condition deteriorated on Saturday, she was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of the hospital around 5:00pm on that day,” said Yousuf. In total, 902 dengue patients—405 in Dhaka and 497 outside the capital—were admitted to different hospitals across the country in the last 24 hours. In a press release, the Health Emergency Operation Center and the control room at the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said the number of admitted patients currently undergoing treatment in government and private hospitals was 4,254.

The press release also said that the Institute of Epidemiology Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) received information about deaths of 185 people in dengue outbreak this year. The institute is scrutinising the information to confirm that those deaths were due to dengue. So far, it has confirmed 57 deaths, out of 97 such cases, were due to dengue, the press release added. According to DGHS, A total of 57 dengue patients have died across Bangladesh from January 1 till September 1.

However, the unofficial death toll is reported to be over 128.

As many as 2,340 patients are currently receiving treatment in 41 government and private hospitals in Dhaka, whereas a number of 1,914 people are undergoing treatment outside Dhaka. Since January 1 till September 1, a total of 71,097 people have been affected by dengue.

Among the admitted patients, a total of 66,658 have been released from their respective hospitals and clinics after treatment.
