A group of students and teachers of Jahangirnagar University (JU) brought out a procession on the campus yesterday to protest the alleged graft over ongoing development project of the university. Students under the banner of ‘Jahangirnagar against corruption’ brought out the procession from the social sciences faculty and after parading different streets on the campus ended at Battala. Earlier, students at a press conference held at the conference room of Teacher-Student Centre alleged that JU VC Prof Farzana Islam is involved in corruption over the ongoing development project citing different reports published in print media that the students wing of the ruling party Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) got Tk 2 crores from the project fund.
They demanded the proper investigation in this regard by forming probe body. Spokesperson of Bangladesh Sadharan Shikkharthi Adhikar Sangrakkhan, JU university unit Khan Muntasir Arman said Vice-Chancellor is not taking any action against the allegation arose against her that proved she is corrupt. On the other hand, VC backed teachers’ group ‘Bangabandhu Shikkhak Parishad’ denied the allegations against JU VC at another press conference held at Teachers Launch of New Arts building around 3pm yesterday.
However, Secretary of Bangabandhu Shikkhak Parishad Prof Bashir Ahmed denied the corruption allegation against JU VC Prof Farzana at a counter press meet. “We have already sent the rejoineders to the corresponding media houses from where the reports have been published and the university authority will file defamation cases if needed”, he said. Mentionable, demonstrators have given an ultimatum till September 3 on three-point demand. “We will sit with the demonstrators and hope we will be able to pacify them”, said Prof Bashir Ahmed responding to a query.
