Rangpur-3 by-polls on Oct 5

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka

The by-election to the Rangpur-3 parliamentary constituency, which was left vacant following the death of Jatiya Party (JP) chairman HM Ershad, will be held on October 5. The Election Commission (EC) yesterday announced the poll schedule at a press conference at its Agargaon office in the city. According to the schedule announced by the EC’s additional secretary, Md Mokhlesur Rahman, the last day for submission of the nomination papers is September 9. The scrutiny of nomination papers will be held on September 11.

The last day for the withdrawal of nomination forms is September 16, he said, adding that voting will start from 9:00am and continue till 5:00pm on that day. The EC official said the commission has decided to hold the bypoll to Rangpur-3 constituency by using EVMs. Ershad died on July 14 this year. The EC has a constitutional obligation to complete the by-poll within 90 days after the seat fell vacant. A total of 4,42,072 people are scheduled to exercise their franchise in the election. Of them, 2,21,310 are men and 2,20,762 women. The ruling AL, its arch rival, the BNP, and the Opposition JP are looking for suitable candidates to contest the by-polls in this constituency, known as a JP-dominated area. Ershad had won the poll from Rangpur-3 in the December 30 parliamentary polls.  AL sources said the ruling party would field its own candidate to contest the by-poll while the BNP leaders said they would also take part in the election. BNP leaders said they are seeking a candidate and the next standing committee meeting of the party on Saturday would discuss BNP candidate. The JP, on the other hand, has started the sales of nomination papers to hopeful candidates.
