What is needed for Bangladesh fast-bowlers at this moment is to bowl consistently in the right areas in Test cricket. After coming here in Bangladesh taking the new job of fast bowling coach, Charl Langeveldt, emphasized more on this matter. Arranged by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), the (two-day) practice match the players played at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur before flying to Chattogram for the one-off Test against Afghanistan where the pacers beside batsmen honed their skills and techniques, the performance that made the coach happy.

“We focused more on consistency,” said Charl Langeveldt. “I feel the guys try much on it when they bowl. They got skills but they always try to get wicket,” Langeveldt told media at the entrance of the SBNCS after the conclusion of the practice match. “For me, in Test cricket, you need to be able to take wickets. They showed to be consistent, both pacers from both ends,” he added.

Citing an example of South African bowler Vernon Philander, the fast-bowling coach said that he was not so quick but he was consistent in good length that made him different than other bowlers in the world.   “In Test, it needs to be more consistent in good length,” he said. “Good bowlers like Philander [Vernon] is not fast but very consistent in length. He makes the batsmen play and a lot more than any other bowler in the world,” he added.

Langeveldt praised pace bowler’s performance in the practice match, saying that the more they play the more they will be experienced.

“I was excited. In day 1, they really bowled well. They created pressures from both ends. Today they tried a little more things and these are the things you can correct,” the coach viewed.

“The more they play the better they will give. And the more you can speak about it. As long as they are learning from their mistakes, these are key for me,” he thought.

Charl rated Mustafizur Rahman the key bowler of the Bangladesh team and said that they have given him rest for precaution because he is needed for the next games they have.

Along with that, the coach also said that they have to make ready other bowlers as back-up because he might be injured to carry the workload.

“Who’s not going to miss Fizz. He is a very good bowler. If you don’t miss then that’s something wrong with you. He is a good bowler. We’re all going to miss him. But we’ll have to deal with things as well. You have to make sure you’ve back-up. If he is injured, we need back-up as well,” he said.

“At the moment, he is just carrying a niggle. For more precaution, he has been given rest because we’ve a lot of white-ball cricket coming up, Twenty20 World Cup is also on the way so we left to look after him because he is our best bowler in Twenty20 and 50-over cricket. He bowled one over today and then being off just for precaution,” he also said.

“It’s workload. I can’t see a player in Test with a niggle. It’ll make things worse for you. You’ll need him most in the upcoming series against Afghanistan, Zimbabwe in tri-nation, in white-ball cricket. We want him available more than one-Test match,” he added. He named the bowlers of Taskin Ahmed, Ebadot Hossain and Abu Jayed Rahi and said that they have got the pace and can hit the deck hard that the good sign of their improvement.

“They got the pace. For me it's all about the control. You need that pace with control. Sometimes off the wickets you need pace. So you can be quick through the air. But Taskin is a hit the deck bowler, Ebadot is a hit the deck bowler, and Rahi, he can also hit the deck hard,” he said.

“It was a bit bouncing for the bowlers, seamers. They actually bowled very well. They got the ball in the right areas what we've been working on for the last week. So the improvement is good. And that’s exciting for me,” he concluded.
