The soaring crime rate at Rajshahi University has become a matter of serious concern for the authorities. Mugging, eve teasing, sexual harassment, and stealing of computers, cameras, television sets and money have become regular incidents on the campus. Most of these crimes are committed by junkies to collect money to support their addiction.
Sources say around 15-20 forgery syndicates have been working on the campus. Students and teachers allege that the lacklustre approach of varsity authorities in preventing such crimes has only encouraged the miscreants. Earlier, four iron pipes, Wi-Fi routers, gymnasium instrument and other valuable things, worth Tk 2 lakh, were stolen from Nawab Abdu Latif Hall.
A four-member investigation team has been formed to look into the matter. A complaint in this regard has also been lodged with Motihar police station. Sub-inspector Mominul Hoque, in charge of the case, said, “It’ll take time to submit the FIR. We’re trying our best to deal with the incident.”
Though two and a half years have already passed after the murder of Motalib Hossain Lipu, a residential student of Nawab Abdul Latif Hall, the police could not make any significant headway in the case. The case was transferred to the CID on January 21 this year.
On October 20, 2016, Motihar police recovered the dead body of Lipu in a drain of Nawab Abdul Latif Hall on the campus. Family members of the victim, teachers, and students expressed their frustration over the progress in the murder case.
In last two months, around 27 mobile phones, 20 computers and 10 bicycles were stolen from different residential halls and dormitories on the campus. Besides, mugging incidents are also on the rise, especially in the dark. The RU authorities have not installed CCTV on important areas on the campus, even though the government allocated money for this one year back.
This has also contributed to a spurt in the number of petty crimes, inconveniencing teachers and students alike.
