Growers of bottle gourds happy over good production, fair price

Bottle guards are selling well in local markets and its growers are earning good profits. There has been bumper production of this vegetable in the district this year. The cultivation of this tasty vegetable has gained popularity here.

Monir Hossain, a grower in Char Uria, said large bottle gourrds were produced there, attracting wholesalers, who bought the produce at competitive rates. Farmers expressed happiness over the production of the crop when. They said they were earning good money and repeatedly getting bumper crops. They also said the production cost of the vegetable was low, which made farmers all the more interested in its cultivation.

Kabir Hossain, a grower, said: "I have been cultivating bottle gourds on 70 decimals of land. About 800 of them were sold this month and hope to sell about 400 more this season.

At the beginning of the season, the price of a large piece was Tk. 100. But now the price had dropped to Tk. 70–80."

Another farmer, Akbor Hossain, said: "I sold Tk. 3,500 worth of bottle gourds (at Tk. 71 per piece), in the first week this month."

Sadar upazila agricultural officer Md Moshreful Hasan said availability of water and agri-inputs, such as fertilisers and pesticides, boosted the production of this vegetable. He also said farmers were expecting a bumper crop this season.

He further said the deputy director of agricultural extension (DAE) had recently arranged a training programme and campaigned for the use of organic fertilisers as well as the adoption of chemical-free methods of cultivation.
