It is disturbing to note that most of the industrial plots in the Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) estate in Bhola have been lying vacant for the past 30 years. According to a report of this newspaper yesterday, various problems have engulfed the estate including want of gas supply, dilapidated internal roads, lack of drains and inadequate financial support for entrepreneurs. But in Bhola alone such estates are not in grip of a host of problems in many places in the country.
What is surprising is that the internal roads of the industrial estate are in a dilapidated condition and have not been repaired for the last two decades. Huge potholes have developed on the roads, making it difficult for vehicles to move. As a result, trucks and other goods vehicles cannot enter the industrial estate.
Absence of any initiative by the authorities to resolve the problems speaks volumes about their lackadaisical attitude. How will the entrepreneurs feel interested in investing there despite the estate’s good connectivity with Dhaka, Barishal and Chattogram?
Before setting up an industrial estate ground should be prepared first. Building infrastructure is one of the vital factors for an industrial estate. If there is any setback related to it the whole project is likely to suffer. It is the responsibility of the relevant authorities to create a congenial environment for the entrepreneurs to invest in their projects.
After the emergence of Bangladesh the country had to bear the stigma of ‘bottomless basket’. Credit goes to the successive governments and entrepreneurs for their efforts to industrialise the country successfully. Bangladesh has not only been able to free itself from the stigma but also managed to establish its status in the comity of nations. Many Bangladeshi products have great demand abroad.
A congenial climate for investment should be created in the country for attracting the entrepreneurs. All conditions, including supply of adequate electricity and gas, for investment should be created. Only then entrepreneurs would feel encouraged to invest in their respective projects.
Government and the NGOs can play their respective roles in this regard. If this is done, it will generate employment opportunity for scores of unemployed people of the country. The relevant authorities should solve the problems the Bhola industrial estate is confronted with.
